Subrata Mandal: Dying to live and living after death

Subrata Mandal: Dying to live and living after death

Subrata Mandal was always at war with himself to be at home with his evolving SELF. Never a conformist, he would like to experience a truth rather being content with hearing it from others.

For many it would be  rather hard to comprehend such a simple and transparent being as most of us spend most of our time dealing with people with multiple faces. He had one face and that was about living life as it came and a life that was intellectually connected with the larger concerns of those on the margins. No wonder he chose to specialise in Environment Economics, an interdisciplinary domain that would keep him connected and rooted.

His soul was not designed to rest in peace. In fact saying RIP would be to offend him. He was born restless and hid Mukti lay in continuing restlessness that was aimed at bringing joy to those around him and the people he cared for as an academic. It reminds me of Vivekanand at the time of his death. He had all the major diseases, more than a dozen, that the Indians suffer from in 21st century ; yet he lived his life fully.

Subrata was a rare breed. You have to adore simplicity to love him. In Narmada hostel of JNU(1987-89) he was seen in the company of both the BEAUTY and the BEAST. Puzzling to many and of course a source of envy and target of choicest of HURLS from the moral police, Subrata was just being himself: deriving ANAND through optimizing the mix of YIN and YANG!

Hey buddy,  I salute your courage.  You remind me of our Lokayat sages one of whom was Charwak who had this demystifying motto: JAWAT JIVET SUKHAM JIVET. You had your own source of SUKHAM that had nothing to do with much touted and misinterpreted  RINAM KRITWA GHRITAM PIVET. Subrata , you had the Gangotri of GHRITAM within you and you lived a rich life sprinkling all of us with that GHEE so that we  didn't go out begging for the same.

I wish we could resurrect the tradition of recognising the greatness of people amongst and around us and not leave this DUTY to the posterity alone.
