Communicating Caste
What could be the aspects of looking at the caste from the perspective of communication?
*
Does it challenge the Caste of Communication as a discipline?
*
Are there any parallels to it globally in view of the fact that CASTE is not limited to India?
*
Is our Intrapersonal communication on caste in synch with Interpersonal, Group, Massline and Mass communication?
*
All such issues came up during a panel discussion on the subject with the reputed Belgian Indologist Koenraad Elst and an Indian Orthopedic-Indologist Dr Tribhuwan Singh.
Related to this is the European and SEMIT*IC concept of CASTE/COLOUR imposed on India's VARNA, JAT and JATI almost without discrimination, and addition fuel to the fire you have Risley 's NASAL Index of caste categories that increases the numbers manifold vis a vis pre-British numbers as recorded by Travernier and Sunderland.
*
Another interesting implication of the destruction of Indian economy by the British East India Company was MANUFACTURING CASTE (Singh, Tribhuwan, 2016; Deuskar, 1905; Durant, 1930) along the lines of Manufacturing Consent!
*
All this demand an interdisciplinary study of caste with COMMUNICATION in the focus: from Intrapersonal to Interpersonal to Group to Mass by factoring CONSTITUTIONAL provisions and the role that the conflict between Economics and Politics plays at the policy level.
*
My current engagement is COMMUNICATING CASTE in view of MANUFACTURING CASTE over the last 250 years with Indian perspective in Mind.
*
This also looks at the role of British and US academic institutions in advancing Mutually Exclusive/Binary Methods that, with overt or covert Papal-Theological moorings, , disregarded local perspectives and interests.
*
Had the opportunity to be part of two panel discussions ( February 1, Delhi; February 15 , Allahabad) on the same. Interestingly, a few Europeans were more Indian than most of the Indians while most of the Indians continue to be swept off by the colonial paradigms (mainly because of lack of access to original texts as the texts that we read in English or French are generally simplified to the level of falsehood)!
