University System & Media Teaching in India

More than 50 % of media programs in the country are managed by non-media departments, mostly Hindi, English, Sociology etc. Students passing out from these departments are more into dishing out editorials on anything or everything without basic understanding of media platforms or training in the associated skills. They strive to clear NET and become college/university teachers without the much needed grounding in the industry. It is akin to becoming a Swimming Teacher without appropriate training in swimming. In fact more than 80 percent of them make no distinction among Media, Mass Communication and Journalism. Profession, Career and Industry are interchangeably used, thus adding to the confusion. For them MASS COMM and JOURNALISM are synonimous. No wonder, the degrees are disproportionately journalism-centric and nomenclature is mostly FUNNY. Literature departments tend to turn back the wheel of history by devoting more time to the Mission aspects of Media programs than the Professional ones without realizing the fact that every profession has certain ethical moorings and mission beyond a point carries with it avoidable biases and promotes professional ignorance and illiteracy. Many literature departments have gone a step further. To prove their contemporary relevance they beget mass Communication courses/ programs and later fail to keep pace with the Professional requirements of the courses/programs and start behaving like Police Inspector who refuses to allow his daughter to go for IPS because he will have to SALUTE her in case she gets the same cadre. DU, JNU media courses are living examples of what is argued here. GGSIPU Mass Comm School is lucky in that it escaped a similar fate though it had more complex birthing circumstances: from Management to Chemistry to Humanities...OMG it was no less than a miracle. Good Luck University School of Mass Communication! You had a saving grace, thanks to IPU's professional focus, NOT the University System per se that has repeatedly proved its incapacity to deal with this Inter-disciplinary Domain as most of the universities are brought up in a Catholically Rigid Disciplinary environment that has led to cubiclization of knowledge and practice of CASTE SYSTEM among the disciplines.

दूसरी बात कबीर की लोकप्रियता बनाम तुलसी दास की लोकप्रियता ! इन तबकों की बातें छोड़िये । अगर कबीर जैसा व्यक्तित्व पिछले 500 सालों में दो चार भी ही गए होते तो ब्रितानिया की बजाय सारे संसार पे हिन्दुस्तान की हुकूमत होती । सोचने वाली बात तो ये है के हिन्दुस्तान में कबीर के बाद कबीर जैसा कोई हुआ भी ?अगर नहीं तो क्यों नहीं। ज्ञान के नाम पर रट्टू तोतों की फ़ौज़। संस्कृत के नाम पे सत्यनारायण स्वामी की कथा। और ये रट्टू तोते बन गए संस्कृत के महापंडित । पिछले एक हज़ार सालों में संस्कृत में अगर कुछ सार्थक लिखा गया तो वह था  कंठभरणम और वो भी हज़ार साल पहले । उसके बाद अगर कुछ लिखा भी तो कोकशास्त्र के नए संस्करण । तो ये तो कुल बौद्धिक उपलब्धि है पिछले 1000 साल की । भला हो अंग्रेजों का जिन्होंने अशोक और गौतम बुद्धा और नालंदा महाविद्यालय और तक्षशिला को खोज कर हमें दिखाया । और तो और संस्कृत वांगयमे से पर्चे करवाया । नहीं तो ये पांडा पुरोहित रूपी रट्टू तोतों की कैद में मरणासन्न था ।

कविता: लंगोटिया यार से मिलना

हम यार
लंगोटिया हैं
मिलते इत्तेफाक से
कभी किसी बाज़ार
या
फिर फिर शोकसभाओं में।

कविता: बेबस देश लाचार नेहरू

प्रभातफेरी के बाद प्रार्थना
प्रधानाध्यापक के आशीर्वचन
फिर
सावजी की दुकान की गरमागरम जलेबी
और स्कूल से छुट्टी ।
शुभ बालदिवस!

बचपन के नारों में-
गाँधी , सुभाष और इंकलाब
भगत सिंह, राजगुरू, सुखदेव
लोहिया और जयप्रकाश थे।
सरस्वती माता, दुर्गाजी
शंकर, राम, कृष्ण
और हसन-हुसैन थे।
नेहरू जी नहीं थे।

पंडित नेहरू से
हमारा परिचय
कोर्स की किताबों ने कराया-
पहले प्रधानमंत्री,
इंदिरा गांधी के पिता,
महात्मा गांधी की आँखों के तारे,
भारत भाग्य विभाता।

कश्मीर पर पाकिस्तान
पंचशील पर चीन के धोखे
और
बाकी मामलों में
सीआईए से नाभीनाल आबद्ध
विपक्षी पार्टियों के असहयोग  ने
उन्हें लाचार बना दिया।

बेटी इंदिरा को
कांग्रेस पार्टी में
घोर अनिक्षा के बावजूद लाना पड़ा।
इंदिरा गाँधी भी
ऐसे ही मजबूर हुईं
राजीव गाँधी को राजपाट देने के लिए।

त्याग का, देशभक्ति का-
ये सिलसिला चलता रहे
हम कृतज्ञ बने रहें
एक नहीं, दो नहीं
तीन जयंतियाँ हैं
इस परिवार के खाते में।

पंडित नेहरू ज़िन्दाबाद!

ज्ञानपीठ 2013: जीवन की किताब से रूबरू कराते कवि केदारनाथ सिंह को ज्ञानपीठ

केदारनाथ सिंह को ज्ञानपीठ से खुद इस पुरस्कार की साख बढ़ी है.कोर्स की  किताबों के बहाने जीवन की किताब खोलते चलनेवाले वे विरल शिक्षक रहे हैं।उनकी क्लास से आप एक बेहतर इंसान होकर निकलते हैं.

निराला की कविता - वह तोड़ती पत्थर- जैसे वे पढ्रते हैं उसीसे आधी बात समझ में आ जाती है. फिर इस कविता से वे समाज, संस्कृति, औरत का संघर्ष, राजनीति, अर्थतंत्र सबकी परत दर परत खोलते चलते हैं.

हिंदी की लोकभाषाओं के अलावा वे अन्य भाषाओं के साहित्य पर नज़र रखते हैं। अमेरिकी कवि वाल्ट व्हिटमन के काव्य के ख्यात अध्येता हैं।उनका गद्य भी कविता की कसावट और तीव्रता का अहसास कराता है. वे हिंदी के सर्वाधिक पढ़े जानेवाले गद्यकारों में भी एक हैं।

उनकी ये कविता खुद उनकी तस्वीर खींचती लगती है:

उसके हाथ को
अपने हाथ में लेते हुए
मैंने सोचा

सारी दुनिया को
इसी तरह
नरम और गरम होना चाहिए ।

जीवन में  गहरी आस्था रखनेवाले केदारनाथ सिंह  1991 में सोवियत विघटन के बाद भी अविचल रहे जब तरक्कीपसंद अदब के पैरोकारों का एक बड़ा धरा रुदाली करते थकता नहीं था। गोयथे को याद करते हुए कहा:

विचारधाराएं सारी
मुरझा गईं हैं
पर जीवन वृक्ष
निरंतर हरा है।

कभी शब्द के विकास को लेकर अपने संस्कृत शिक्षक  को याद करते हुए कहते हैं:

कोई शब्द  'भ्रष्ट ' कैसे हो सकता है? उसका तो विकास होता है। जब यह सही है तो
फिर  किसी शब्दरूप को अपभ्रंश या बिगड़ा हुआ कहना  भी अवैज्ञानिक है।

यहाँ कबीर बरबस याद आते हैं:
संसकीरत जल कूप है
भाखा बहता नीर ।

केदारनाथ सिंह भी वैसे ही लौटते हैं अपनी भाषा में  जैसे कठफोरवा अपने कोटर में।

अंत में एक निजी सी बात । जेएनयू में कहते थे कि वे
अपने शोधकर्ताओं पर समय नहीं देते थे।मेरा सिनाॅप्सीस उन्होंने आधा दर्जन बार बदलवाया था। इस बीच मेरा विवाह हुआ और  उनका आशीर्वाद लेने हम नमूदार हुए।मेरी मेम साहिबा  की ओर मुखातिब होते हुए उन्होंने फरमाया:

मैंने इनसे एम.फिल करा लिया है, आप पीएच.डी करा लीजिए.

कविताः ख़ुर्शीद को याद करते हुए

महीनों से तुम्हें जीया सा लगता है
मौत से पहले मुआ सा लगता है
तुम्हारा वजूद अपना सा लगता है,
अकेले खुद से खतरा सा लगता है।

कहते हैं तर्क तूने इस्लाम से किया,
हमें तो शाज़िशेआदम सा लगता है।

कविता: सेकुलर, शहर और दंगे

कभी परीक्षा में पास
तो कभी नौकरी के डर से
फिसड्डी करार दिए जाने
तो कभी खुद के डर से
हे राम!
तुम्हारे राज में मैं
बिना हिम्मत हारे
सेकुलर बना रहा।

हमारे स्कूल में
गाँव में
खेत -खलिहानों में
मंदिर-मस्जिदों में
हाट-बाजारों में
कोई ऐसा नहीं था।

मेरी यादों
और सपनों में भी कोई ऐसा नहीं था।

सपनों में
बात बात पर
कहावत और गालियों की बारिश करते
आते हैं मेरे बाप ।

दोपहर की तेज धूप में
छप्पर से उतर
टोंटिया लोटे से
कुएँ पर वजू करते
याद आते हैं
महमूद मियाँ ।

नमाज के लिए
चौकी खाली करते
 फिर केले के पत्तल पर
सत्तू , प्याज, नमक, अचार परोसते
याद आते हैं बाबूजी ।

दोनों को
साथ साथ
सिर्फ़ खैनी खाते
गाँजा पीते
या आम खाते देखा है।

चूँकि मुर्गा मुसलमान
और बकरा हिंदू था
हमें चिकन करी और आमलेट
चोरी चोरी खिलाने वाले महमूद मियाँ
याद आते हैं।

शहर भागलपुर,
जहाँ वो जाते थे
गाहे बेगाहे
अपने दामाद से मिलने,
दंगाग्रस्त हो गया।

याद है
पूरे गाँव का इकट्ठा होना
किसी का किसी से
कुछ नहीं कहना
झपासो फुआ का बुदबुदाना
फिर जोर जोर  से चिल्लाना:
ई शहरवा
एक दिन सभनी के लील जाइ ।

सपनों में
शहर नहीं, सेकुलर नहीं
सिर्फ़ गाँव
गाँव के महमूद मियाँ
हिंदू बकरा मुसलमान मुर्गा
बाबूजी की गाली भरी कहावतें
और
झपासो फुआ का आर्तनाद ।

हे राम!
बाबूजी को, मुझे  हिंदू
महमूद मियाँ को मुसलमान
रहने दो।
बस
झपासो फुआ के मन से
शहर का डर भगा दो।

ये भी बता दो
कि शिक्षित सेकुलर लोग
और दंगे
शहर में ही क्यों होते हैं?

Je Jetna Padhua Wu Utna Bhadua(जे जेतना पढ़ुआ ऊ ओतना भड़ुआ)

Was in an award function(7.11.2014) YUVA SAMPADAK of Dainik Jagran. With brilliant youngsters in front, couldn't help going back to my middle school days that made me most of what I am today.

It also reminds me of  what a very graceful cultured elderly lady of my village used to say:

Je Jetna Padhua Wu Utna Bhadua (The more formally educated you are the less genuine you are.).

It took me at least three decades to decode what these words meant and with what amount of pain and agony were they stated.
With all this on the back of my mind I could only request the teachers and parents to let the young ones ask as many questions as they could without worrying about the answers. Questions put up with an open mind lead to answers from within and from those around.
Like the Bhadhua in the aforesaid saying,  our education system has become anything but genuine from the view point of the BAHUJAN. More on this later...
